RunDouble is back: the Couch to 5K app that got two million people off the sofa returns — completely free

After six years of silence, the cult-favourite beginner running coach has been rebuilt from the ground up for modern Android — and every plan, from your first sixty-second jog to a half marathon, now costs nothing.

— RunDouble, the Couch to 5K training app that introduced a generation of first-time runners to running, is back on Google Play today after a six-year hiatus — fully modernised, redesigned, and, for the first time in its history, completely free. Every training plan and every feature is now unlocked for everyone. No subscription. No premium tier. No “first three weeks free, then pay.”

First launched over a decade ago and downloaded more than two million times, RunDouble became the quiet favourite of people who didn’t think of themselves as runners: a calm voice in your ear telling you when to run and when to walk, three sessions a week, over your own music — and nine weeks later, you’re a 5K runner. Then, in 2020, the updates stopped. The app slowly fell behind modern Android, and its reviews filled with a single question from runners who refused to uninstall it: is it coming back?

It’s coming back.

“RunDouble was never about making runners faster — it was about making runners, full stop,” said Martin Long, the app’s founder and developer. “Somewhere out there right now is someone who’s decided this is the week they finally get off the couch. They’re nervous, they’re not sure they can do it, and they’re staring at a wall of fitness apps demanding eighty pounds a year before they’ve run a single step. I didn’t want price to be the reason anyone stays on the sofa. So now it’s free — all of it, for everyone.”

A comeback, not a reskin

The relaunched RunDouble has been rebuilt for today’s Android, wrapped in a new design, and extended to the wrist:

Free, in a market that isn’t

RunDouble returns to a fitness-app market dominated by subscriptions, where popular running and wellness apps routinely charge £50–£120 a year and lock their beginner plans behind trials. RunDouble’s answer to that market is deliberately old-fashioned: the whole app, free, forever, for the people who need the lowest possible barrier to starting — new runners, returning runners, and anyone whose journey starts with “I can’t run for a minute yet.”

Availability

RunDouble — Couch to 5K is available now on Google Play for phones running Android 10 or later, with the Wear OS companion installing automatically on paired watches running Wear OS 3 or later. It is free.
